The incident, confirmed by three Libyan sources and the International Organization for Migration (IOM), ended in tragedy for 10 migrants who died and 31 still unaccounted for.
The migrants, originating from Egypt and Sudan, hoped to reach Europe but faced perilous conditions. Libya continues to be a significant transit route for thousands fleeing conflict and poverty. Despite the rescue, six bodies washed ashore on Saturday, highlighting the dangerous journey.
Efforts to locate the missing continue, with Libya's 100 municipalities reportedly harboring over 900,000 migrants, according to U.N. data. The situation underscores the challenges faced by migrants risking everything for a better life in Europe.
