In a tragic incident, at least 18 migrants lost their lives when an inflatable boat sank off Turkey's western province of Mugla. The Turkish coastguard reported that the boat, equipped with an outboard motor, was spotted at 0300 GMT near Bodrum district and attempted to escape despite repeated warnings.
Adverse weather and sea conditions caused the boat to take on water and eventually sink. Rescue operations are ongoing, with a coastguard helicopter and three boats deployed to the area. So far, 21 individuals have been rescued from the waters.
The origin and destination of the ill-fated boat remain unknown. This incident highlights the dangers faced by migrants who frequently traverse the Aegean Sea, seeking to reach Europe from North Africa and the Middle East, especially from Turkey, which is home to millions of refugees.
