The Gujarat High Court has decisively rejected a plea from the Sant Shri Asharam Ashram, situated in Ahmedabad, concerning a government initiative to acquire land for new sports infrastructure. This move is part of preparations for the upcoming Commonwealth Games in 2030.
The plea aimed to stop the acquisition of a large land parcel in the Motera area. However, the court found that the ashram had overstepped its initial land grant, which was meant for limited religious uses, confirming unauthorized expansions beyond its agreed limits.
The state's reclaiming of this 45,000 square metre plot signifies a major step in enhancing sports facilities in Ahmedabad, aligning with the city's long-term Olympic aspirations. Asaram, the controversial figure behind the ashram, is currently serving life sentences for multiple rape crimes.
