Coal Mine Tragedy in Meghalaya: Inquiry Ordered Amid Rescue Efforts

Meghalaya's Chief Minister, Conrad K Sangma, announced on Thursday that the state government has initiated an inquiry into the deadly coal mine incident in the Thangskai area of East Jaintia Hills district. Sixteen people have lost their lives in what is believed to be an illegal mining operation. The government is determined to ensure accountability is established and those responsible for the tragedy face stringent legal action.
Expressing deep sorrow over the incident, Sangma extended his condolences to the affected families, reaffirming the state's commitment to enforcing safety and legal standards. He emphasized that the government will not compromise on safety and that swift measures are underway to address this situation.
In the aftermath of the explosion, three National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams have been dispatched to the site to aid in rescue efforts. Superintendent of Police Vikas Kumar reported the recovery of 16 bodies, with many labourers still feared trapped inside the mine. Ongoing search and rescue operations involve the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), police, and local authorities. More information is awaited as efforts continue. (ANI)
