Union Minister Jitendra Singh is set to visit the Andaman and Nicobar Islands on January 17 to examine the National Institute of Ocean Technology (NIOT). The visit underscores a push to boost marine activities and examine the immense oceanic potential of the region.

Key focus areas include marine fin fish and seaweed cultivation. The archipelago, with a sea harvesting potential of 1,48,000 tonnes, currently produces 49,138 tonnes annually. Efforts will be directed at increasing tuna yields from the current 4,420 tonnes to the potential 60,000 tonnes per year.

This initiative aims to enhance economic prospects through seaweed marketing and deep-sea exploration. The islands are rich in valuable Polymetallic Nodules, vital for the tech and renewable sectors, and crucial in promoting India's 'Blue Economy'.
