Call for Justice: Family of Keith Porter Jr. Seeks Independent Probe
The family of Keith Porter Jr., a Californian man killed by an off-duty ICE agent, calls for an independent investigation, expressing distrust in the LAPD's handling of the case. Civil rights attorneys urge the state's attorney general to intervene, highlighting concerns over federal immigration officers acting with impunity.
The family of Keith Porter Jr., shot dead by an off-duty ICE agent in California, is demanding an independent investigation, citing a lack of confidence in the LAPD's inquiry. Prominent attorney Ben Crump emphasized the need for transparency in a press conference Tuesday.
Crump and co-counsel Jamal Tooson stressed that the case of Porter, a 43-year-old father of two, requires an impartial probe by California Attorney General Rob Bonta. They compared the case to recent incidents in Minneapolis involving federal agents.
LAPD's investigation is under scrutiny after claims that Porter was firing a gun to celebrate New Year's, a practice discouraged due to safety risks. However, attorneys argue there's no concrete evidence he exchanged gunfire with the ICE agent.
