Seif al-Islam Gadhafi, the son of Libya's former dictator Moammar Gadhafi, was slain in Zintan, Libya, officials reported on Tuesday. The 53-year-old, once seen as a potential heir and reformist figure, was shot dead according to the initial findings of the investigation conducted by Libya's chief prosecutor's office.

Khaled al-Zaidi, Seif al-Islam's lawyer, confirmed his client's death on social media without elaborating on the circumstances. Abdullah Othman Abdurrahim, a representative in Libya's political dialogue, also shared the news. Seif al-Islam's political team released a statement blaming 'four masked men' for the assassination and suggested efforts were made to hide the crime's traces.

Seif al-Islam had been a divisive political figure in Libya following his father's fall in 2011. Although granted amnesty by one of Libya's rival governments, he was convicted in absentia for inciting violence and wanted by the International Criminal Court. His controversial presidential candidacy in 2021 further fueled political divisions in the nation.
