Voting concluded across 152 constituencies in West Bengal's first phase of assembly elections at 6 pm Thursday. Officials confirmed that those who arrived before closure would be allowed to vote. Almost 90% of the 3.60 crore electors participated by 5 pm, marking one of the highest turnouts in the state's recent electoral history.
Polling commenced in 16 districts at 7 am amid stringent security, determining the future of 1,478 candidates, including 167 women. The significant voter turnout is seen as critical in the high-stakes battle between the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the BJP. Dakshin Dinajpur district led with 93.12% polling, reflecting a strong electorate presence.
Reported clashes and intimidation incidents raised concerns, though the Election Commission deemed polling 'largely peaceful.' Detailed reports on these incidents have been requested, as attacks on candidates including two from the BJP, were noted in multiple constituencies.
