In a highly charged political atmosphere ahead of Gujarat's local body elections, BJP Lok Sabha MP Mitesh Patel's remarks have stirred controversy. Patel allegedly threatened to withhold development grants if voters in Anklav town elected Congress candidates, igniting criticism and resulting in a formal complaint by the Gujarat Congress to the State Election Commission.
The complaint, lodged on Wednesday, called for legal action against Patel, representing Anand in central Gujarat. His comments, made during a campaign meeting in Anklav in front of Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi, claimed that BJP members were previously denied development funds during Congress rule, suggesting a reciprocal action if Congress candidates win.
The Gujarat Congress accused Patel of using fear tactics to influence the election's outcome. The speech violated the Model Code of Conduct and was interpreted as showing that the BJP government might withhold grants if Congress prevails. This controversy is under scrutiny as votes are cast for various local government bodies.
