Wildfires raging across the southeastern United States escalated on Wednesday, decimating nearly 50 homes in southeastern Georgia and triggering evacuations. The most severe fires have emerged around Jacksonville, Florida, and along the Georgia coast, driven by an enduring drought, low humidity, and persistent winds.
Brantley County Manager Joey Cason reported the rapid destruction of homes, with emergency services evacuating residents as flames approached their backyards. The Georgia Forestry Association stressed the seriousness of the situation as evacuations continued across several communities.
In Florida, firefighting resources were strategically placed statewide amid warnings of one of the worst fire seasons in decades. The National Weather Service noted elevated fire risks due to dry conditions, with smoke impacting air quality from Atlanta to Jacksonville.
