Ethnic Shutdowns Paralyze Manipur

Shutdowns called by ethnic organizations in Manipur disrupted daily life across various districts. The protests, stemming from past violent incidents, kept schools, banks, and markets closed while blocking roads and affecting public transport. Normalcy in Naga-inhabited areas and those under Zomi Coordination Committee's influence was particularly hindered.

Ethnic organizations in Manipur have enforced shutdowns, significantly disrupting normal life in 12 out of 16 districts as of Wednesday, officials reported. These shutdowns, fueled by demands for justice following violent incidents, have left public services at a standstill across the region.

The upheaval began with a five-day shutdown initiated by a Joint Action Committee to protest an April 7 bomb attack in Bishnupur district that resulted in the deaths of two children. The protest has seen road blockades in Imphal West and impacted all five valley districts substantially.

Similarly, in Naga-inhabited areas, a United Naga Council-led shutdown has been in effect since Tuesday, following the April 18 ambush which killed two Tangkhul Naga persons. The disturbances include road blockages, affecting the movement of central security forces. Meanwhile, a 13-hour shutdown in Churachandpur, under the Zomi Coordination Committee's banner, marks continued unrest seeking justice for the deceased BJP MLA Vungzagin Valte.
