Myanmar's President Grants Third Amnesty Amid Ongoing Tensions
Myanmar's President Min Aung Hlaing has approved an amnesty for 4,335 prisoners. Among them are 179 foreigners set for deportation. The move follows previous amnesty initiatives, amid ongoing detention of political figures, including former leader Aung San Suu Kyi, since the 2021 military coup.
Myanmar's President Min Aung Hlaing has sanctioned an amnesty for 4,335 prisoners, as reported by state television on Friday, marking the third instance within the last half year. The identities of those released were not disclosed during the MRTV announcement. Traditionally, Myanmar conducts amnesties annually during its Independence Day in January and for its New Year in April.
The release includes 179 foreign nationals, who will subsequently be deported, according to MRTV. The report also highlighted the commutation of death sentences to life imprisonment, life terms to 40 years, and reductions of other sentences by a sixth, though details were sparse. The Assistance Association for Political Prisoners, a human rights organization, noted over 30,000 individuals have been detained on political grounds since the military's 2021 coup, led by Min Aung Hlaing, against an elected government.
Notable detainees include the ousted leader Aung San Suu Kyi, ex-President Win Myint, and remaining members of the National League for Democracy party, along with numerous activists and anti-junta militia members. Suu Kyi, serving a 27-year sentence, has been convicted on numerous charges deemed politically motivated, such as incitement and corruption. Her son, Kim Aris, disclosed limited information about her condition, acknowledging her declining health. In contrast, Min Aung Hlaing, who was officially appointed president on April 3, emphasized his commitment to peace and stability amidst a prolonged civil conflict.
