Rahul Gandhi Accuses Government of 'Power Grab' in Constitutional Amendments

On Wednesday, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi criticized the government's proposed constitutional amendments, describing them as an 'attempted power grab' through delimitation and gerrymandering. He assured that the Congress would not permit any unfair treatment towards southern, northeastern, northwestern, and smaller states.

Anticipating a special three-day session of Parliament, Gandhi reaffirmed the Congress party's full support for women's reservation. He pointed out that the bill for women's quota, already passed and part of the Constitution since 2023, is not what the government currently proposes. Instead, he accused the government of using delimitation and gerrymandering to manipulate power dynamics.

Opposition leaders, including Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, held a meeting to discuss their joint strategy against the delimitation provisions. They emphasized their commitment to women's reservation but opposed the 'politically motivated' approach of the amendment. They also promised to prevent any potential loss ('Hissa Chori') of representation for OBC, Dalit, and Adivasi communities.
