The Congress party announced a list of 27 candidates for the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections set for April 23. The decision sparked dissent within the party, as some members voiced concerns over insufficient representation for backward communities and women, which goes against the party's social justice values.
Senior leader S Jothimani criticized the nominations, highlighting the exclusion of the Kongu Vellalar Gounder and Arundhatiyar communities, alongside other marginalized groups. In response, TNCC president K Selvaperunthagai announced he would resign after the polls, focusing solely on serving his constituency.
Jothimani expressed her discontent on social media, pointing out the inequality in candidate selection. Despite facing backlash from certain party factions, Congress will contest 28 of the 234 seats in alliance with DMK, with results to be announced on May 4.
