Iran's parliament speaker, Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf, has made a bold claim that around 7 million Iranians are prepared to fight against any potential US ground invasion of the Islamic Republic.
The statement was shared via Qalibaf's online posts and has circulated widely on social media. This marks the first time a high-ranking official has mentioned this figure, in a country of approximately 90 million people.
While the origins of the 7 million figure remain unclear, Iranian state media and text message campaigns have called citizens to volunteer, and even retired soldiers and children as young as 12 are being encouraged to express their willingness to join the cause.
