Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced that Britain should shift its focus toward strengthening economic and defense partnerships with Europe due to the global instability caused by the ongoing Iran conflict. Speaking at a Downing Street press conference, Starmer outlined plans for a summit with the European Union, despite U.S. President Donald Trump’s repeated criticisms.
As tensions mount, Starmer has resisted U.S. pressures to escalate military actions, stating his country's future lies more closely aligned with Europe. He believes the long-term national interest necessitates closer collaboration with European allies rather than the United States, marking a significant shift in British foreign policy post-Brexit.
Despite opposition backlash accusing him of reopening Brexit wounds, Starmer ruled out rejoining the EU's customs union. His administration focuses on vital diplomatic efforts, including the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, crucial for global energy shipments, coordinating with 35 nations to address the blockade initiated by Iran.
