In a bold move to uphold its neutrality, Sri Lanka denied permission for US warplanes to land at Mattala International Airport earlier this month, President Anura Kumara Dissanayake informed Parliament. The decision emerged amidst heightened regional tensions and highlights Sri Lanka's commitment to a neutral stance.
The rejection followed requests by the US military to bring warplanes from Djibouti, destined for the island nation on March 4 and 8. The denial underscores Sri Lanka’s decision to maintain neutrality despite mounting pressures related to Middle Eastern conflicts.
Discussions between President Dissanayake and US Special Envoy Sergio Gor focused on regional security and economic ties, further emphasizing Sri Lanka's strategic relevance. Meanwhile, concurrent maritime tensions saw the US destroy an Iranian vessel near Galle, intensifying the strategic stakes in the Indo-Pacific.
