Formula One championship leader, George Russell, made headlines by securing pole position for Mercedes in the first sprint race of the season held in China this Friday.

Racing at the Shanghai circuit, Russell led in every phase of the session, clocking a time of 1:31.520 to nab his first career sprint pole. He was joined in a provisional lockout of the front row by teammate Kimi Antonelli, who managed a time 0.289 seconds slower than Russell.

Amidst the competition, McLaren’s Lando Norris placed third and has a potential opportunity to move up pending an investigation into Antonelli’s actions. Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton, who was last year's polesitter for the 100km race in China, came in fourth, followed by McLaren's Oscar Piastri and Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc.
