The assassination attempt on veteran leader Farooq Abdullah has prompted the Union government to assure the Rajya Sabha of enhanced security measures. The attack, described as a matter of 'great concern,' was discussed by members following a close call for Abdullah as he left a wedding in Jammu.
J P Nadda, Leader of the House and Union minister, emphasized that a detailed investigation is in progress to ascertain the gunman's motives. Kamal Singh Jamwal, the 63-year-old attacker, was quickly subdued. This incident heightened the urgency to prevent future security lapses involving the National Conference party president.
The attack has sparked political debate, with opposition leader Mallikarjun Kharge suggesting links to the revocation of Jammu and Kashmir's statehood. However, Nadda rebutted these claims, urging against politicizing the security breach during the ongoing investigation.
