In a significant escalation of regional tensions, an airstrike targeted an Italian military base in Erbil, Iraqi Kurdistan, housing NATO personnel. The Italian Defence Ministry confirmed the strike was deliberate, amid ongoing conflict involving Iran.
Italian Defence Minister Guido Crosetto acknowledged the attack as intentional, given its status as a NATO base involved in Operation Inherent Resolve, which also doubles as an American base. While he did not identify the perpetrators, he mentioned plans for the 141 Italian soldiers to return home were already in motion.
Though initially reported as a missile attack, subsequent sources indicated a drone was responsible. The Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani suggested the involvement of pro-Iranian militia from Iraq. The base's commander revealed staff took shelter hours prior to the strike, describing safety measures and preparedness as priorities.
