In a strong reaffirmation of parliamentary procedure, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla declared that the House functions strictly according to established rules, negating any individual's privilege to speak freely at any time. The statement came subsequent to a resolution aiming at his removal, which was unsuccessful.
Speaker Birla stressed that the chair is a representation of the House's dignity and continues to guide the proceedings with sincere fairness. Emphasizing this point, he insisted that no member, including ministers, could speak without permissible sanction from the Chair, highlighting adherence to rules.
The Speaker responded to claims regarding alleged partiality against Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi and the suppression of certain topics. Addressing these, Birla clarified his role and cited historical rulings, reinforcing that freedom of speech is contingent upon procedural adherence.
