The Trinamool Congress has confirmed its backing of a no-confidence motion against Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, a stance initially considered by other opposition members. The resolution, citing Birla's alleged partisan behavior, will be taken up when Parliament's Budget session resumes.
The motion criticizes the Speaker for allegedly preventing opposition voices from being heard and accuses him of bias, including making unwarranted allegations against women MPs. Trinamool leaders have been in communication with other INDIA bloc leaders on the issue.
For the motion to proceed, 50 members must stand in support. While both the ruling BJP and opposition Congress have issued whips to ensure the attendance of their MPs, the government's numerical strength is expected to defeat the resolution. Birla can be present to defend himself but cannot chair the discussion.
