On Tuesday, Peru's Congress ousted President Jose Jeri after only four months in office, igniting yet another swift leadership transition following a scandal dubbed 'Chifagate.' The controversy arose from undisclosed meetings between Jeri and Chinese businessman Zhihua Yang, drawing widespread criticism and leading to Jeri's removal.
Seventy-five lawmakers voted in favor of the motion, with 24 against and three abstaining. Legislators are now tasked with electing a new head of Congress who will assume the presidency. This marks the eighth presidential shift in Peru in eight years, as the country grapples with ongoing political instability.
Jeri ascended to the presidency following the removal of Dina Boluarte and has since faced intense scrutiny. The latest move against him underscores Peru's struggle with corruption and political turbulence. With upcoming elections scheduled for April 12, many citizens remain undecided on their future leader.
