Historical Comparisons Stir Political Tempest in Maharashtra

Maharashtra's political landscape was shaken on Monday when Congress chief Harshwardhan Sapkal ignited controversy by equating Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj with 18th-century Mysuru ruler Tipu Sultan. This statement drew immediate condemnation from Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who labeled it 'shameful'.

Tipu Sultan, a divisive historical figure, is celebrated by some for his battle courage against the British but criticized by others for his alleged bigotry. In contrast, Shivaji Maharaj is revered for his military and administrative prowess, underscoring benevolence and social welfare. Sapkal’s comments were made in the context of a controversy over a Tipu Sultan portrait in Malegaon.
