Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis is contemplating a bid for the helm of South Africa's Democratic Alliance after the current leader, John Steenhuisen, declared he wouldn't stand for re-election.
Steenhuisen's departure opens the field, and Hill-Lewis, a popular figure since becoming mayor in 2021, has emerged as a frontrunner for the position. In a statement, Hill-Lewis acknowledged receiving numerous requests from party members urging him to enter the race.
He intends to reveal his decision later this month, adhering to the party's campaign regulations. Despite the leadership consideration, Hill-Lewis affirmed his commitment to seeking another term as Cape Town's mayor, with local government elections slated for later this year.
