Rahul Gandhi's Parliamentary Protest Sparks Controversy
Rahul Gandhi accused Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla of acting at the government's behest by denying him the right to speak on national security issues. This led to an intensified government-opposition dispute with the suspension of eight MPs. Gandhi viewed this incident as a threat to democratic conventions.

Rahul Gandhi, Leader of Opposition, has launched a stinging critique of Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, accusing him of giving in to government pressure. Gandhi claims he was unfairly barred from discussing national security concerns, terming this action a 'blot on our democracy.'
The controversy escalated when eight MPs were suspended following Gandhi's repeated attempts to address the 2020 India-China conflict, citing an unpublished memoir of former Army chief M M Naravane. The MPs, drawn from Congress and CPI (M), engaged in disruptive conduct, culminating in their suspension until the session's conclusion on April 2.
Gandhi insists that such actions represent an unprecedented suppression of the opposition's voice, especially in discussions central to the President's Address. He has called on the Speaker to safeguard the democratic rights of all Members of Parliament, reiterating the essential role of the opposition in upholding democratic principles.
