Controversial Tanzanian Election Sparks Deadly Protests
Tanzania faces unrest following President Samia Suluhu Hassan's landslide win amid claims of electoral bias. The main opposition party CHADEMA has rejected the results, alleging fraud. Mass protests have erupted, and the government's response has been criticized internationally. Unverified reports indicate a high death toll during the demonstrations.
Tanzania is engulfed in turmoil after President Samia Suluhu Hassan was declared the winner of an election tainted by allegations of exclusion and deceit. The main opposition party, CHADEMA, denounced the results as fabricated, arguing that a legitimate election never took place due to their exclusion.
In the wake of Hassan's victory announcement, mass protests erupted across the country, with demonstrators clashing with authorities. Reports, though unverified, suggest a significant number of casualties, while the U.N. confirmed at least 10 deaths in three different cities linked to the unrest.
The Tanzanian government has condemned the protests, labeling the death toll claims as exaggerated and defending its human rights record. In response, authorities have imposed a nationwide curfew, restricted internet access, and disrupted transport and trade within and beyond its borders.
