Taiwan Stands Firm Against China's Territorial Aspirations
Taiwan's President Lai Ching-te has rejected China's 'one country, two systems' policy, affirming Taiwan's commitment to freedom, democracy, and self-defence. Taiwan vows to invest in its military, emphasizing that sovereignty should be upheld and that peace can only come from strength against Chinese aggression.
In a resolute stand against China's persistent territorial ambitions, Taiwan's President Lai Ching-te declared Taiwan's unwavering commitment to freedom and democracy, rejecting the 'one country, two systems' framework proposed by Beijing. This comes as China intensifies its rhetoric, expressing an unwillingness to rule out force in its bid to bring Taiwan under its control.
Addressing soldiers at a military base in Hukou, Lai emphasized that peace cannot be achieved by conceding to an aggressor's demands or sacrificing sovereignty. He reiterated Taiwan's determination to maintain its democratic constitutional system, stressing that the Republic of China and the People's Republic of China are not subordinate to each other.
With increasing military pressure from China, Taiwan is bolstering its defences by increasing military spending to 5% of GDP by 2030. At a ceremony in Hukou, Lai oversaw the commissioning of Taiwan's first battalion of M1A2T Abrams tanks supplied by the United States, highlighting strong international support despite the absence of formal diplomatic ties.
