The Bombay High Court is reviewing a petition from a firm led by NCP MLA Rohit Pawar, contesting the Maharashtra government's levy on sugarcane crushing. The levy aims to fund the Chief Minister's Relief Fund and other welfare programs.
Justice Manjusha Deshpande ordered Baramati Agro Ltd to deposit 50% of the levy to process their crushing licence. This directive comes pending the decision on their petition challenging the levy. The court assured a refund with interest if the petition succeeds.
Despite opposition criticism, the government argues the levy is crucial for aiding flood-affected regions like Marathwada. The next hearing is scheduled for November 13, with similar petitions before the court's Kolhapur bench reflecting widespread concern among sugar factories.
