Police rescued four children from bonded labour situations in the Palghar and Thane districts of Maharashtra, as reported on Friday.
A young boy, aged six, was found working in a shop in Bhayander against a mortgage of Rs 1000, extracted due to a debt his grandmother owed. Allegations assert the shopkeeper promised a salary but underpaid and subjected the child to harsh conditions.
Three girls aged 12-16 were similarly rescued from forced labour in the same region, after having been confined and coerced into household and fishery duties. Police initiated legal proceedings under various human rights and child protection acts, while local advocacy group Shramjeevi Sanghatana was instrumental in the operation.
