Keiko Fujimori Announces Presidential Run After Legal Victory
Keiko Fujimori, daughter of Peru's late former president, confirms her candidacy for the upcoming presidential election. This follows the constitutional court's dismissal of money-laundering charges against her. Fujimori, who previously ran in three elections, enters the race after her father Alberto Fujimori's death and release from prison in 2024.

Keiko Fujimori, daughter of Peru's former President Alberto Fujimori, has announced her candidacy for the April presidential election. This decision comes days after the constitutional court dismissed money-laundering charges against her.
Fujimori has been a consistent figure in Peruvian presidential races, being the runner-up in the past three elections. Her last attempt in 2021 was thwarted by leftist Pedro Castillo, who was later impeached and detained. Fujimori's previous election bids in 2011 and 2016 also ended in defeat at the hands of different political opponents.
This campaign marks her first since the passing of her father, Alberto Fujimori, earlier this month. The late president had been released from prison on a humanitarian basis after serving part of his sentence for human rights violations. Recently, Peru's constitutional court ruled that money-laundering charges against Keiko Fujimori, linked to her 2011 and 2016 campaigns, could not be applied retroactively, lifting significant legal challenges from her political career.
