In a surprising twist, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced plans to charge some Congress leaders from Sribhumi district with treason. This comes after they allegedly sang Bangladesh's national anthem during a party meeting.
Speaking to the press after a cabinet meeting, Sarma accused the Congress party of tacitly endorsing claims from certain Bangladeshi leaders that the Northeast region belongs to Bangladesh. He described the anthem incident as a grave insult to India and its citizens.
The controversial event took place at the district Congress office in Sribhumi. Congress leaders reportedly opened their Seva Dal meeting by singing two lines from 'Amar Sonar Bangla,' the Bangladeshi national anthem, penned by Rabindranath Tagore, who also wrote India's national anthem.
