In a fiery rebuke, TMC leader Abhishek Banerjee accused the BJP-led Centre of orchestrating a 'backdoor NRC' via the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bengal. He alleged the process aimed at excluding genuine voters, potentially affecting the 2026 Assembly polls.
Banerjee, speaking to the press, lambasted the Election Commission of India (ECI), claiming it acted as an extension of the BJP. He warned constitutional bodies would survive political shifts, cautioning against the perceived bias in the electoral roll revision process.
The Diamond Harbour MP threatened massive protests if eligible voters were removed, linking the exercise to broader issues of political interference and governmental neglect in Bengal's development.
