U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth is scheduled to engage in significant talks with Japan's Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi in Tokyo this Wednesday. The discussions aim to strengthen Japan's defense posture and improve the longstanding alliance with the United States.
The meeting follows Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi's recent vow to U.S. President Donald Trump to bolster Japan's defense capabilities, aspiring to usher in a "new golden age" of collaboration. Japan currently hosts the largest concentration of U.S. military forces abroad.
Japanese plans to increase defense spending from approximately 1.8% to 2% of GDP forecast completion by March 2026. These measures aim to address growing regional security concerns, notably China's military activities and North Korea's weapons programs, marking the gravest security environment since World War Two.
