Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra has called on Union Tribal Affairs Minister Jual Oram to recognize the Kalanadi community as a Scheduled Tribe. The request, highlighted in a statement by the party on Tuesday, seeks to address the socio-economic challenges faced by this distinct tribal group.
In a letter to Minister Oram, Gandhi pointed out that the Kalanadi community, with its dwindling population of 328 individuals, maintains a nomadic lifestyle. A study by the Kerala Institute emphasizes the group’s unique language, ancient customs, and separate culture, underscoring their societal and economic backwardness.
While historically marginalized, the Kalanadi community has persistently fought for ST status. Priyanka mentioned that the state government has already recommended their reclassification from the Other Eligible Community category to the Scheduled Tribes list.
