In a landmark decision, Malian authorities have sentenced former Prime Minister Moussa Mara to two years in prison for a social media post condemning the actions of the country's military rulers. The court's decision reflects a wider clampdown on dissent in the politically charged West African nation.

Earlier this year, the military government led by Assimi Goita dissolved political parties and extended its mandate without elections, sparking criticism from public figures like Mara. His lawyer, Mountaga Tall, announced that Mara also faces a fine of 500,000 CFA. Amnesty International has expressed concern over the increasing repression of dissenting voices.

Amidst these political tensions, Mali's government faces the additional challenge of a growing jihadist insurgency. Militant activity has disrupted fuel supplies, prompting schools to close until mid-November as instability continues to threaten the region's peace and security.
