The Election Commission's decision to undertake a special intensive revision of electoral rolls in West Bengal has spurred political tensions. The ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) suspects that the BJP might manipulate the process to erase eligible voters, vowing democratic protests if unfair deletions are executed.
TMC spokesperson Kunal Ghosh emphasized that while the party welcomes electoral roll revisions, it will not tolerate any removal of legitimate voters facilitated by political agendas. He also advised citizens to remain calm and avoid what he describes as the BJP's attempts to mislead them.
Conversely, the BJP has defended the Commission's initiative, emphasizing its importance in eliminating illegal voters. Party leader Suvendu Adhikari stated that legitimate voters should not worry, but infiltrators allegedly comprising TMC's vote bank will be targeted. The electoral roll revision will cover numerous states including West Bengal, starting November 4.
