On Monday, Congress MP KC Venugopal criticized the Kerala government's decision to sign a memorandum of understanding on the Pradhan Mantri Schools for Rising India (PM SHRI) scheme, describing it as a "back door" move accompanied by a "secret agenda." Speaking to reporters, Venugopal demanded an investigation, questioning the Communist Party of India (Marxist) government's motives and the alleged pressure for the policy shift.
Venugopal raised concerns about the decision being made without the knowledge of the Cabinet, the Left Democratic Front, or even the party leadership. He highlighted a troubling trend of aligning with the communal policies of the Central Government, suggesting possible pressure on CPI(M)'s all-India secretary. This agreement has sparked significant controversy in Kerala, leading to Venugopal's demands for transparency.
Protests erupted as Congress' Kerala Students' Union, along with CPI's student organizations, marched to the General Education Minister's office. The scheme has generated political uproar due to its association with the New Education Policy, 2020. Police intervened by using water cannons on protestors, reflecting growing tensions around the PM SHRI initiative in the state.
