In Maharashtra, remarks by Revenue Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule regarding the surveillance of WhatsApp groups have ignited a political firestorm. Opposition figure and Shiv Sena-UBT MP Sanjay Raut has reacted strongly, demanding the minister's arrest and raising concerns over potential privacy violations.
Speaking at a gathering in Bhandara district, Bawankule asserted that the communications of party workers are being closely monitored in anticipation of forthcoming local elections. He cautioned against any rebellious talk within the groups.
Raut alleges that phones of opposition leaders are also being tapped, questioning whether the minister has access to advanced surveillance technology. Bawankule, for his part, clarified that his remarks were taken out of context, stating that WhatsApp is a key communication tool for his party.
