Karnataka Cabinet Approves Revised Reservation Formula for Scheduled Castes

The Karnataka Cabinet, in a crucial meeting on Friday, approved a revised internal reservation formula for Scheduled Castes within the 15% quota, facilitating long-awaited government recruitment initiatives. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah disclosed the Cabinet's unanimous decision to allocate 5.25% each for 'right-hand' and 'left-hand' groups, with 4.5% reserved for other Scheduled Castes including nomadic communities.

The modification follows judicial directions, adhering to the 50% ceiling for total reservations as affirmed in the Indra Sawhney case. Siddaramaiah mentioned an initial proposal of 17% for SCs and 7% for STs but restrictions necessitated a reduction to 15% for SCs and 3% for STs.

The reservations move emerges from longstanding demands for internal reservation and is rooted in recommendations from a commission led by retired judge H N Nagamohan Das. Recruitment and admissions will proceed under the new structure, with further adjustments pending court rulings.
