A court in Assam's Nagaon district sentenced 20 individuals to life imprisonment on Friday, in connection with the 2018 lynching of two men in Karbi Anglong. The District Sessions Judge D J Mahanta also imposed a fine of Rs 20,000 on each convict for their role in the brutal incident.
The victims, Nilotpal Das and Abhijeet Nath, were targeted amid unfounded suspicions of being child lifters. Despite the gruesomeness of the crime, the judge ruled that it did not qualify under the 'rarest of rare' category, ruling out the possibility of a death sentence.
Besides life imprisonment, the convicts face additional rigorous imprisonment for lesser charges, with the sentences to run concurrently. The court also called for compensation for the victims' families under the 'Victim Compensation Scheme,' highlighting the long-lasting impact of the tragedy.
