The United States has launched sweeping sanctions targeting Cambodian senator Kok An and 28 individuals involved in crypto-romance scams that have defrauded American citizens of millions of dollars. The U.S. Treasury Department alleges that Kok An leveraged his political influence to shield operators who exploited romantic relationships to entice Americans into transferring digital assets, only to misappropriate the funds.

Reporting indicates that trafficking victims were forced to participate in the fraud under duress, with Kok An's properties allegedly housing these illicit operations. The announcement was coupled with the arrest of operators in Burma planning similar scams.
