Renowned conductor and composer Michael Tilson Thomas, a visionary in the orchestral music realm and the long-serving music director of the San Francisco Symphony, passed away at the age of 81, announced the orchestra. Known affectionately as MTT, he battled brain cancer for nearly five years.
Thomas, a 12-time Grammy winner, died in the company of loved ones at his San Francisco residence. His husband, Joshua Robison, preceded him in death earlier this year. Despite a challenging glioblastoma diagnosis following surgery in 2021, Thomas continued to inspire, conducting concerts into 2025.
In addition to his expansive 25-year tenure with the San Francisco Symphony, Thomas co-founded the New World Symphony, gaining recognition as a bold innovator who broke traditional boundaries in music. His career spanned major orchestras globally, leaving an indelible mark on the classical music community.
