Authorities have thwarted a potential tragedy after arresting a former law enforcement officer allegedly en route to commit a mass shooting at a significant festival in New Orleans. Christopher Gillum, of Chapel Hill, North Carolina, was apprehended in a Florida hotel with a firearm and hundreds of ammunition rounds, according to multiple state authorities.
The suspect's family reported him missing, citing a pattern of self-harm and threats against Black individuals. Gillum's intentions were considered credible enough to prompt an investigation and collaboration between law enforcement agencies across North Carolina, Florida, and Louisiana.
Previously serving as a police officer in North Carolina, Gillum was arrested without incident and is awaiting extradition to Louisiana. Despite being stopped initially without charges, updated intelligence led to his arrest and the recovery of weapons. Authorities continue to monitor the situation, with no direct threats currently identified for Louisiana festivals.
