Judgment Day: ICC Charges Duterte with Crimes Against Humanity
The International Criminal Court has confirmed charges of crimes against humanity against former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte. He is accused of overseeing deadly anti-drugs crackdowns leading to dozens of murders first as Davao City mayor and then as president. Proceedings have been delayed due to health concerns.
The International Criminal Court declared on Thursday that charges of crimes against humanity against ex-Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte have been validated. These charges arise from his role in aggressive anti-drugs operations during his political tenure.
A panel of three judges reached a unanimous decision, asserting there are 'substantial grounds' to implicate Duterte in multiple murders. These alleged offenses span from his time as the mayor of Davao to his presidency.
Duterte, who is now 80, was detained in the Philippines last year. However, legal proceedings have faced delays due to concerns about his health.
