Tensions in the Strait of Hormuz escalated on Wednesday as Iran's paramilitary Revolutionary Guard opened fire on a container ship, causing damage to the vessel. The incident occurred around 7:55 am, as confirmed by the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations centre.
The attack by a Revolutionary Guard gunboat happened without any prior communication to the container ship, UKMTO reported. Fortunately, there were no injuries reported, and there was no environmental damage as a result of the attack.
Iran has yet to comment on the assault, which follows the US's seizure of an Iranian container ship last weekend. The incident underscores the rising tensions in the region after planned ceasefire talks in Pakistan fell through.
