Integrity in Question: Election Commission's Stance on Strong Room Access

The Election Commission of Kerala has issued strict directives to District Election Officers and Returning Officers to ensure that strong rooms containing Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) remain sealed until the designated vote counting day. The directive was prompted by reports of unauthorized access in Kozhikode’s Perambra constituency.

Kerala's Chief Electoral Officer, Rathan U Kelkar, emphasized the importance of adhering to these guidelines to maintain the transparency and security of the electoral process. The controversy arose after a room storing EVMs was allegedly opened, prompting demands from Congress for a thorough investigation, hinting at potential misconduct.

Kozhikode's district administration clarified that no breach occurred, suggesting confusion over the opening of a separate materials room for updating records. Despite reassurances, political tensions heighten as Congress leaders suspect efforts to tamper with the electoral outcome. The results of Kerala’s Assembly polls will be announced on May 4.
