Federal Action Targets Sewer Overflow into Potomac River

The Trump administration took legal action on Monday, filing a complaint against the District of Columbia Water and Sewer Authority following a disastrous collapse of a major sewer pipe. This incident resulted in an overflow of more than 200 million gallons of untreated sewage spilling into the Potomac River.

The complaint, put forward by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Justice's Environment and Natural Resources Division, claims D.C. Water violated the Clean Water Act. The federal government is demanding financial penalties, the initiation of sewer assessment and rehabilitation projects, and pollutant reduction efforts to address this significant environmental breach.

Coincidentally, on the same day, Maryland's attorney general also initiated a lawsuit against D.C. Water concerning the sewer line rupture, amplifying the legal repercussions facing the utility company.
