A gunman caused a harrowing scene at the Teotihuacan pyramids, one of Mexico’s most renowned tourist attractions, by taking the life of a Canadian woman and injuring four others before committing suicide on Monday, officials revealed.

The assailant fired shots from atop one of the historical pyramids, according to local media reports. President Claudia Sheinbaum tweeted her condolences and assured she was in communication with the Canadian Embassy, though there was no immediate response from Canada's Foreign Ministry.

This alarming event comes as Mexico gears up to co-host the 2026 FIFA World Cup, drawing significant attention to the preparations around security measures for anticipated international visitors. Teotihuacan, an iconic cultural landmark in Mesoamerica, continues to be a focal point for tourists from around the globe, with 1.8 million visitors last year alone.
