The Odisha Chief Electoral Officer, R S Gopalan, is calling for comprehensive verification efforts before the deletion of around 9.8 lakh voters from the state's electoral rolls, following complaints of wrongful removal. The process is on hold for approximately 2 lakh voters whose complaints have been lodged.
Concerns are escalating as opposition parties, including the BJD and Congress, express their apprehension over the possibility of political bias affecting the voter lists. Both parties demand transparency and argue that voters migrating for work should remain on the rolls. Allegations of politically motivated deletions are at the forefront of discussions.
Sushanta Kumar Mishra, the Additional Chief Electoral Officer, highlighted instances where proper verification was missing before deletions were made. The CEO's office has introduced a toll-free helpline to facilitate voters' ability to check their status on the list and to address grievances promptly.
